The trilogy features many different races that vary in appearance and personality. Here are the ones that play major roles in the movies:
Elves are beautiful, tall, long-haired and graceful creatures. Elves do not physically age and can never be ill. However, they can die from violence or extreme negative emotion.
Orcs are the main foot soldiers of Sauron. They are dim-witted creatures that are always miserable and hate themselves and their master whom they serve out of pure fear.
Men are located mainly in the kingdoms of Gondor and Rohan. Although they are destined to be kings, they are easily corrupted by the power of the one ring and can be controlled by Sauron with ease.
Uruk-hai are half-orcs half-men. They have great strength and superior size. Saruman has been breeding them in order to inflict massive damage during the war. They have thick armour that is almost impossible to pierce through.
Dwarves live mainly in mountains and caves. They are famous for their mining skills. Dwarves are aggressive and fierce in battle. Male and female look almost the same - long beards and short.
Hobbits or halflings look similar to men but much shorter. They have curly hair on their heads and feet. They like eating and drinking as well as smoking pipeweed.
Ents are a very ancient race. They are tree-like creatures that cannot reproduce because they have lost their female mates, the entwives.
Trolls are creatures that lurk in the Misty Mountains and Mordor. Some turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. Others are clever and resistant to sun.
Wizards are extremely powerful and intelligent. They are tall and wear pointy hats, long robes and carry a staff. The staff is used in battle and to cast spells. There are five wizards in the mythology but only two of them appear in the movie trilogy.
